When quiet voices disappear but screams are loud in OBS

Distinguish clipped word endings, loud screams, and mixed game audio in OBS recordings, and understand where recording filters and post-processing fit.

To choose your preferred interface language in OBS, open Settings → General → Language, choose your language, and restart as prompted. The following steps help identify symptoms in an existing recording. This site does not work as a real-time OBS filter.

Recordings where only screams become too loud

OBS documentation describes Compressor as a filter that reduces louder moments, while Limiter restricts moments exceeding a ceiling. Both can be applied as source filters, but suitable settings depend on your microphone, distance, and voice. Do not assume one set of numbers works for everyone.

For an already-recorded file, start with LevelUp Audio's Microphone voice mode at 60%. Compare the loudest moment with quiet explanations, then raise strength slightly if sudden loudness remains. Screams already distorted in the original cannot be restored.

Recordings where quiet speech and word endings disappear

Listen to the original first to check whether OBS filters have cut off quiet word endings. Filters that block sounds below a threshold may be responsible, so compare before and after those filters and inspect the recording setup. Post-processing cannot restore sound that does not exist in the file.

If word endings are present but simply quiet, leveling over time may help. Lower the strength if fan noise between phrases also gets louder. LevelUp Audio does not remove noise, so recording-environment noise needs to be addressed separately.

Recordings where game sound buries the voice

The OBS compressor can also be used for sidechain/ducking: reducing one sound based on another. This is configured in your recording or streaming setup. If game audio and voice are already combined into a single track, use this site's Game + voice mode, keeping in mind that sound effects change too.

For precise control of the voice alone, record a separate microphone track next time. This tool can select and process one audio track from a file with multiple tracks. Exported video does not include unselected tracks, so continue editing with the original if you need all of them.

Check a short section before processing the full recording

Choose a section containing quiet explanations, screams, and game effects. Compare with the original to check the microphone's character and the game's atmosphere before applying the settings to a long file. If you already used strong filters in OBS, compare low-strength and 0% results before increasing post-processing strength.
